WhaleMap.world (“WhaleMap”) respects your privacy and processes only the minimum data needed to provide the service.

1. Information We Collect

• User-submitted sightings: species, location, notes, coordinates, date/time.
• Technical data: IP address, browser, and form metadata collected automatically by Netlify to prevent spam and maintain service quality.

2. How the Data Is Used

We use submitted sightings to display them on WhaleMap. We may aggregate or analyze data to improve accuracy or highlight patterns. Anonymous chat messages may be logged to improve Wally’s responses. No personal data is collected.

3. Legal Basis

By submitting a sighting, you consent to the storage, display, and public sharing of the submitted data.

4. Data Storage

User submissions are stored via Netlify Forms on Netlify’s servers. Netlify is GDPR-compliant.

5. Your Rights

• Request deletion of any submission you made.
• Request a copy of your submitted sightings.

6. Third-Party Services

Site hosting and form processing is provided by Netlify. Biodiversity data may be sourced from GBIF or OBIS under CC-BY 4.0.
